Movie Mondays!

Daniel Day Lewis does his best John Huston impersonation in this Paul Thomas Anderson film that bears little in common with the director’s earlier works. Beautiful to look at with an astounding score, the film may be a bit obtuse for the average viewer. Mainly a study of a misanthropic oilman, Day-Lewis’ performance is what makes the film. As a character piece though, the pacing is somewhat slow and ponderous. This film reminded me of Stanley Kubrick’s work and while Kubrick is widely acknowledged as one of cinema’s great directors, here too is a piece not readily accessible to a wide audience. Don’t be lured in by the title, as malevolent as Day Lewis looks in the previews there are only a few moments of real action in the movie. Unless you are a lover of film as an art form, you will most likely come away disappointed.
